CHAPTER Ten

Jack walked down the wooded path, trying to make sense of everything that had happened. He was shocked the Spirit Quest affected him so greatly. He had never considered a quest to be anything more than a question-asking session. The idea of earning his answers by introspection still stunned him. He had never anticipated the emotional impact and tried to settle his mind after learning such powerful truths. Tears went unshed, but he redirected the pent-up energy to move faster, as he tried to outrun his past

Melissa…, I could feel her touch. She did not die mad at me like I feared; instead, she wanted to apologize and even got my dumplings as a peace offering. Even more, she did want to have children together, and we could have had our family. These memories I strove hard to forget played before me, and for what? I did not expect this to hurt this much. How does this fit into all the chaos at the Park? Obviously, this will take a moment to figure it all out.

Sparks of light caught his attention from the corner of his eye. As he turned to face them, they disappeared. He kept walking and once he realized they indicated which direction he should go, he went with it and he followed them. The woods grew denser, and the path became more obscure as he walked. The path quickly disappeared and only left a light foot trail. Jack cracked his neck and looked around. The place felt familiar—comfortable almost— but he couldn’t remember why. The guiding lights still blinked for him, but he found himself wondering if he had a choice at all. He focused solely on the question that had brought him there and started walking forward. The wolf tensed in high alert and he found himself agitated even more.

I know. This is odd. We are walking without knowing what we are walking toward and what we are supposed to do. The Spirits are clearly guiding me towards something. I should have asked Lorna for a lot more information about how things work in this place. I mean, what happens if I don’t go the way they want me to? It’s not like I have played by the rules all of my life, anyhow. What happens if I go this other way? If this quest is about me, shouldn’t I have some kind of decisive power?

He determinedly stepped off the path and felt a horrible wrenching. Energy fluxed and moved around him in a dizzying array of patterns forcing him to wince and squinted against the harshness. It soon didn’t matter as his vision went from gray to black and he waived from as his equilibrium failed. Jack flailed his arms uselessly and fell over. He wasn’t sure if he landed on the “ground,” but took a deep breath, forced himself to stand again. After moments—too many to count—the world stopped bending and shifting around him, his sight came back and the pain tingling up and down his spine went away.
